This handkerchief and dried flowers allegedly stained with blood are accompanied by a handwritten note that reads: “Paris - 1897 – For forensic studies – Handkerchief with stains – Flowers suspected of being drenched in blood - Crime on Vaugirard Street.” This controversial crime took place in Paris around the time that Cruz was studying at the Toxicology Laboratory there. He published a paper related to the matter in the Annales d’Hygiène Publique et de Médecine Légale in 1898, entitled “Studies on the investigation of poisoning by gas lighting” (in French), witnessing to his brief experience with forensic medicine
